The silk carré scarf : an emblem of the aristocracy.
At the court of Louis XVI appeared the ancestor of the silk scarf: a silk handkerchief with a square shape. Over the years, this small piece of fabric became a luxury item and was worn more and more around the necks of European queens. The latter wore them during their public appearances and in particular during equestrian shows, which led a large French company specialized in equestrian equipment to create its first silk carré scarves in 1937. The company was inspired by the military environment where, at the end of the 19th century, the square-shaped "illustrated handkerchiefs" taught young illiterate men called up to serve in the army, actions and procedures, from handling weapons to first aid. Thus, this accessory is associated with the elegance and morals of high society. The Montpensier knot, where the sides of the carré scarf meet in a knot in front, is associated with it.
