Episode 2: Skin Tone and Undertone.
The different undertones and skin tones
Skin tone, also known as complexion, plays a key role in choosing clothes, makeup, or jewelry. Skin tones are categorized as light, medium, and dark.
Knowing what suits you best depends not only on your skin's visible tone (light, medium, dark) but also on what is known as your undertone. This is the natural, permanent hue that lies beneath the surface of your skin. Unlike skin tone, which can change (for example, through tanning), your undertone always remains the same. It determines how certain colors "work" or don't work for you.
There are three main types of undertones:
-
Cool, with hints of pink or blue.
-
Warm, with golden, yellow, or peach tones.
-
Neutral, a subtle blend of both.
💡 How do you determine your undertone?
A few simple clues can help you:
-
Your veins: Look at your wrist in natural light. If your veins appear blue or purple, you likely have a cool undertone. If they appear more green, your undertone is probably warm.
-
Jewelry: Does yellow gold suit you better? You likely have a warm undertone. If silver or white gold makes you look more radiant, you probably have a cool undertone. Do both look good on you? You have a neutral undertone.
Which silk scarf colors should you wear based on your skin tone and undertone?
💫 Light skin tone
Light skin tones are luminous and delicate, but can sometimes look dull if you choose shades that are too neutral or too close to your skin tone. The goal is to create a subtle contrast.
-
Cool undertones: Fresh colors like sky blue, powder pink, or lavender enhance the skin’s radiance. You can also opt for a navy blue or royal blue scarf, which will beautifully contrast with your complexion.
Our selection: our Mistral or Sunset prints, which combine pale and cool colors with brighter ones, adding intensity and contrast while maintaining a soft look, or our Forêt , which contrasts very elegantly against fair skin. -
Warm undertone: Warm and soft shades like peach, coral, or camel look beautiful on this skin tone. Choose a scarf in caramel brown tones or an orange scarf to elegantly highlight your complexion. These warm shades add a touch of light without overwhelming fair skin.
Our selection: our Herbarium pink scarf, with its rosy peach background, and our Mistral terracotta print, with its combination of navy and terracotta, are ideal for a pale complexion with a warm undertone.
💫 Medium skin tone
Medium skin tones are often very versatile, especially if they have a neutral undertone.
-
Cool undertone: Choose silk scarves in bold colors, such as plum, royal blue, or emerald.
Our selection: our Pas de Deux and Massalia outremer scarves, with their blue accents, and our Herbarium green print, with its vibrant green background. -
Warm undertones: Deep, earthy shades like terracotta, khaki, mustard yellow, brown, red, or burgundy bring out the skin’s natural golden tones. Copper and gold tones are best for accessories to add warmth and radiance.
Our selection: ourSoleil d’Automne, and Mistral Terracotta prints, with their warm and deep shades.
💫 Dark skin tone
Dark or very dark skin tones are often radiant and deep. They look great in bright, rich, and contrasting colors. You just need to be careful not to "dampen" the radiance of the complexion with overly dull tones, but some pale colors can really stand out on dark skin.
-
Cool undertones: Bold scarf colors like midnight blue, magenta, purple, navy blue, or raspberry enhance the depth of the complexion. Light and cool shades like pale pink, light blue, or white add a luminous and elegant touch.
Our selection: our Enchanted Wood, Winter garden chocolate, and Night Sun prints, which combine rich and deep shades. -
Warm undertones: Warm and vibrant shades like copper, orange, caramel, or brown bring out the skin’s full richness.
Our selection: our Massalia orange scarf, with its bright colors, or our Winter garden moka print, which enhances dark complexions with its range of browns.
💡 What if you're somewhere in between?
If you have a neutral undertone, you're in luck: almost any color can look good on you, as long as you strike the right balance. The key is to avoid extremely cool or warm tones. Opt for "natural" colors like burgundy, forest green, navy blue, or old rose.
✨ In summary
Knowing your skin tone—and especially your undertone—is essential for choosing the right colors, whether in fashion or makeup. Rather than following trends, the idea is to work with what naturally suits you to effortlessly bring out your beauty.
