The silk square: an emblem of aristocracy.
At the court of Louis XVI appeared the ancestor of the silk square: a square-shaped silk handkerchief. Over the years, this small piece of fabric transformed into a luxury item and was increasingly worn around the necks of European queens. They wore them during their public appearances, particularly during equestrian shows, which led a major French house specializing in equestrian equipment to create its first silk squares in 1937. The house drew inspiration from the military, where, at the end of the 19th century, "illustrated handkerchiefs," square in shape, taught young illiterate conscripts actions and procedures, from handling weapons to first aid. Thus, this accessory became associated with the elegance and customs of high society. The Montpensier knot, where the ends of the square meet in a knot at the front, is particularly associated with it.

During the 20th century, the greatest fashion designers of the 1950s embraced the silk square and turned it into a full-fledged fashion accessory. Like a canvas, they played with patterns and colors. Legend has it that Grace Kelly wore a Hermès square to support her arm after a fracture!
